SIBS presents report on payments in the EU
In September 2024, CEPS (Center for European Policy Studies), in partnership with ECRI (European Credit Research Institute) launched a Think Thank to debate the future of European retail payments. The Task Force was chaired by the CEO of the SIBS Group, Madalena Cascais Tomé, and was made up of relevant representatives from the payments industry in Europe.
Over the course of five months, this working group met to assess the trends, challenges and future prospects of retail payments in Europe and the conclusions were compiled in a report (available here) presented in Brussels.
The Task Force report describes the current situation of low-value payments in the European Union, discusses how to continue to develop a competitive and fair market that benefits both the European sector and consumers, and highlights the need for regulators and market players to collaborate with each other in order to drive continuous innovation in payments that meets the expectations of consumers and merchants. Ensuring the security of payment solutions and protecting consumers against fraud is also fundamental to the resilience of this market. The report concludes with a set of policy recommendations aimed at promoting a dynamic, competitive, resilient, fair and secure payments market in Europe.
After the presentation of the report, the event featured a panel debate on the future of payments in Europe, where SIBS was also represented by the Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer, Teresa Mesquita.
